ON DOWN-TO-EARTH POETRY

A poem should be a pleasure to read, not a homework assignment. In the world of poetry, Live Verse resides at the bottom of the heap. And that's a good thing. It's poetry for the rest of us. Of course, REAL poets dismiss rhymed verse as novelty poetry. You know, greeting card stuff. Well, here's a challenge. Click on "Nobody Knows" in the left column. Read it. If that's novelty poetry, George Bush is a novelty president! Because Live Verse is not JUST rhymed verse. It's underdog poetry. It sees the world from the bottom up.

The trouble with democracy is politics. And it's big trouble! can we save democracy from itself by laughing behind its back?
